The Women’s Empowerment Project with Street Child Nepal focused on strengthening the social and economic resilience of Dalit women by creating pathways to education, leadership, community engagement, and long-term empowerment. Through structured community work, coaching, and programme development, the project supported women graduates to organise, build confidence, and access new opportunities.
This work was contributed to by Ms. Jodie Weatherston, Senior Advisor, Education and Social Inclusion, whose experience includes gender equality, social inclusion, and community-based empowerment. Her contributions supported programme development, educational initiatives, and engagement activities that enhanced the confidence, visibility, and leadership capacity of Dalit women across participating communities.
Dalit women in Nepal continue to face systemic barriers such as caste-based discrimination, limited economic opportunities, and restricted access to education. This project responded to these challenges by working directly with women who had graduated from Street Child programmes, supporting them to build collective structures and strong peer networks. The initiative focused on developing an alumni programme to bring women together, strengthening shared learning spaces, enhancing confidence and solidarity, and improving access to skills training and community leadership opportunities. It also facilitated discussions on discrimination, rights, and social protection while deepening community outreach efforts in collaboration with local partners.
By establishing a long-term engagement mechanism for women graduates, the project expanded their ability to advocate for themselves, pursue meaningful opportunities, and challenge entrenched social barriers. The strengthened networks and ongoing support structures have empowered participants to become more active within their communities and better equipped to drive change, contributing to broader efforts toward equality, dignity, and inclusion for Dalit women in Nepal.
